CESA Member New York
“The Long Island Power Authority Board of Trustees is committed to addressing future energy needs through a combination of measures that must include energy efficiency, clean technologies, and renewable projects. LIPA is proud to be a member of the Clean Energy States Alliance. CESA enables organizations to communally share information individually learned to achieve greater deployment and utilization of renewable energy and energy-efficiency projects.”
The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA), a non-profit municipal electric provider, owns the retail electric transmission and distribution system on Long Island and provides electric service to more than 1.1 million customers in Nassau and Suffolk counties and the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens. LIPA’s nationally recognized renewable and energy efficiency programs offer our customers a wide array of sustainable energy options which helps our customers go green and save money, while helping LIPA reduce peak load and our dependence on fossil fuels. In addition, these programs have acted as a catalyst in creating a growing green economy on Long Island. LIPA’s commitment to advancing renewable energy resources on Long Island is consistent with Governor Andrew Cuomo’s New York Sun Initiative and New York State’s Renewable Portfolio Standard.
LIPA offers residential and commercial customer-sited renewable energy rebate programs. To date, LIPA has issued rebates totaling more than $150 million for more than 6,000 customer-sited installations totaling 50 megawatts MW Direct Current (DC).
LIPA Renewable Energy Programs
LIPA has several programs targeting increased renewable generation as part of the overall energy mix.
- Residential Wind Energy
- Offshore Wind Energy
- Wind Energy for Schools, Municipalities, and Non-Profits
- Solar Hot Water Program
- Solar Pioneer Program for Homeowners
- Solar Entrepreneur Program for Commercial Customers
LIPA also has added “utility scale” solar to its energy mix. In April of 2008, LIPA issued its ground-breaking Solar RFP to procure 50 MW of ”utility scale” solar generation directly to the grid. BP Solar and enXco Development Corp were selected to provide LIPA with capacity, energy and associated Energy Credits from nearly 50MW of solar arrays.
On November 1, 2011 the solar farm at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) was completed and commissioned. This project provides LIPA with approximately 32 MW AC of solar energy on the federally-owned BNL property, which is connected to an adjacent LIPA substation. The project consists of large-scale solar arrays, as well as a Laboratory-dedicated array of an additional 1-to-2 MW, and a solar research facility. The remaining MW are obtained from the over 60,000 solar module carport project, which is among the largest solar carport installations in the United States.
In 2012, LIPA Board of Trustees approved LIPA’s new CLEAN Solar Initiative feed-in-tariff (CSI) designed to provide Long Island with an additional 50 MW of solar energy on Long Island. And in 2013, LIPA will expand its CSI to provide for an additional 100 MW of solar generation and also will solicit for an additional 20 MW yet-to-be determined “other” renewable resources.
Lastly, LIPA’s Board of Trustees has committed to issuing a competitive procurement for additional renewable energy supply, including offshore wind, for up-to 280 MW by 2018. This procurement, combined with the expansion of the CSI would bring an additional 400 MW of renewable energy on-line by 2018.
Efficiency Long Island Program
In addition to the diverse and growing renewable programs, LIPA has implemented Efficiency Long Island, a 10 year customer–funded, 520MW energy efficiency program that offers a wide array of incentives, rebates and initiatives to LIPA’s residential and commercial customers to assist them in reducing their energy usage and lower their bills, while helping to reduce the need to build additional power plants on Long Island.
