Northeast
and Mid-Atlantic States Governors' Clean Energy Innovation
Forum - October 2009 - Hosted by
NJ Governor Jon Corzine
The second annual Northeast and Mid-Atlantic
Governors' meeting on Clean Energy met in New Brunswick,
NJ on October 5-6, 2009. New Jersey Governor Jon S. Corzine
served as the host of this meeting, with
support of NY Governor David
A. Paterson. This meeting continued the seminal work initiated
at the first meeting held last year in New York City, hosted
by Gov. Paterson (see more information below). This
year's Forum was an opportunity for key state and federal
officials to exchange ideas and develop strategies for helping
the region’s Governors make concrete progress on specific
regional initiatives. Governor Jon S. Corzine attended the
meeting, addressed participants and offered his perspectives.
With state governments already having lengthy agendas and
little time for new activities, the Forum focused on those
initiatives that can be achieved most effectively through
collaboration. It built upon and reinforced the work of other
regional efforts taking place in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.

Northeast and Mid-Atlantic States Meeting
on Clean Energy Cooperation - September 2008 -
Hosted by NY Governor David Paterson
On September 25 and 26, 2008 senior leaders
from state executive offices, energy agencies, and presidents/chairs
of public utility commissions from the Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic
States convened in New York City to identify collaborative
actions for regional intergovernmental cooperation on clean
energy projects, policies, programs, and market development.
The Governors of New York and Massachusetts co-hosted the
meeting.
Governor David Paterson of New York and Governor
Jon Corzine of New Jersey both offered welcoming remarks
at the meeting. The goal of the forum was to initiate an
ongoing process that will facilitate regional collaboration
on clean energy issues identified by the states. The specific
objectives of the forum were to identify:
1. Key clean energy issues that would benefit from ongoing
collaboration among states in the region;
2. The level of engagement and activity among the states
around issues identified;
3. Next steps for regional cooperation and collaboration
beyond this particular meeting; and
4. Strategies for sustaining ongoing intergovernmental collaboration
around clean energy issues in the region.
Based on pre-meeting input from representatives of each
participating state, the agenda focused on the following
major topics:
•
State/Federal relations on clean energy and climate change
policy
•
Collaborative efforts to address ocean energy issues;
•
Tapping the potential of Bioenergy; and
•
Building a stronger regional renewable energy market.
The meeting consisted of panel presentations and plenary
discussion, as well as breakout sessions on each topic. Topical
breakout groups identified specific actions that the participating
states agreed to pursue collaboratively over coming months.
At the meeting, the State of New Jersey announced its commitment
to hosting a follow-on meeting next year to continue this
collaborative initiative. After the meeting, the State of
Maryland expressed its interest in hosting a third annual
meeting in 2010.
